Women’s bodies are designed to give birth – and most can do it without medical intervention. Giving birth isn’t a medical emergency – it’s a normal function of biology.

Bethlehem Birthing Centre is for women having non-intervention, low-risk births.
Our aim is to give women the choice and best chance to give birth actively and naturally without intervention.

Primary birthing offers many benefits to both mother and baby

new mother with baby

  1. Fewer interventions
  2. Shorter labour: pain medication can mean women do not feel their contractions and know when to push. They may miss opportunities to work with the rhythms of their bodies.
  3. Facilitating breastfeeding: babies born without intervention are more alert and show more interest in breastfeeding.
  4. Faster recovery and more endorphins
  5. Being more present in the moment
  6. Feeling empowered

As a primary birthing unit, Bethlehem Birthing Centre is not a hospital or clinical setting,
which means we do not use medical intervention or drugs. Entonox (gas) is available.

Your midwife / Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) remains in charge of you and your baby at all times
in the same way as in a home birth.

There are no specialists, obstetricians or GPs on site, but Bethlehem Birthing Centre works
collaboratively with Tauranga Hospital in the event that a transfer is required.
